The Maxi Coat

Posted on October 17th 2013 by
Bruno Staub captured this seasons luxurios over-sized cover ups in his latest editorial for Elle UK magazines October issue. A new coat has always been one of autumn/winter’s big style investments, and 2013 is no exception. This time around, over-sized coats are making a statement on and off the runways and this is a trend not to be ignored. The good news is there’s no right or wrong way to wear a maxi coat. Big and billowing or sharply streamlined; mannish or womanly; richly colored or pale and interesting. In fact, this to the floor silhouette comes in every which way, signalling a dream design for all occasions and can be styled in many different ways. Unintentionally slung over the shoulders paired with midi-skirts, trousers, jeans and a pointed-toe single sole pump or mule to casually complete the look. Even the traditional tuxedo jacket is ditching its signature design for a more super size masculine lengthened tailored shape.

Decisions, decisions.

If you can invest in one piece this season make it the mannish coat. Dismiss all thoughts of borrowed from the boyfriend bagginess. The softly curving shoulders, sharp silhouettes and mixes of cocooning cuts all nod to autumn’s new womanly feel. Take your cue from Celiné, Stella McCartney, Top Shop, and Zara also look for dropped shoulders, big lapels and minimal detailing. Swap classic black for sleek grey, feminine pastels, pinstripes or check for maximum impact. Because in the winter, it’s what’s on the outside that counts.
